GUEST SPEAKER: Vietnam veteran and author, Dr. Gerald Nieters

Originally from Hamilton, Ohio, Dr, Nieters attended the University of Dayton medical school before serving in the US Army from 1967-1968. During his service, Dr. Nieters earned the National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal, among other honors. Nieters held a residency in Radiology at Duke University Hospital from 1970-1973 before leading his own Radiology practice until retirement in 1997. Since retirement, Nieters walked the Appalachian Trail in 1999, raising $40,000 for Grace Hospital Nursing Scholarships. Nieters also graduated from Western Piedmont Community College at age 65, earning an Associate degree in Horticulture Technology, fostering his hobby of gardening.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Nieters to the History Museum of Burke County to discuss his recent book, “Cryless - Vietnam memoir of Captain Gerald F. Nieters, MD.”
